Renee DePrato @rdeprato shares her photos and reflections from her trip to the Galápagos with Wildside: “The American Flamingos found in the Galapagos are said to be the most brightly colored flamingos in the world. I hadn't even considered that we would see them, but we actually saw them on several islands. We were even lucky enough to see some young ones.” We return to the Galápagos in 2020 - link in bio! @zeissnature #thegalapagos #birding #americanflamingo

The Galapagos Land Iguana. I don’t have much to say about these reptiles except the fact that their abundance sometimes makes you feel queasy. Their biggest threat in the islands are human introduced dogs, cats and pigs, eventually halving their population. These reptiles are endemic to the Galápagos Islands and it’s been assumed they perhaps arrived to the islands by crossing the Pacific Ocean floating on a raft, debris, tree logs or vegetation. Their population in the islands is approximately 10,000. . . . . . . #thegalapagosislands #thegalapagos #santacruze #santacruzgalapagos #equador #southamerica #charlesdarwin #evolution #travel #seetheworld #reptiles #galapagoslandiguanas #landiguanas #iguana #naturephotography #nationalgeographic #natgeotravel #natgeoyourshot #natgeowild #natgeonature #bbctravel #wildlife #wildlifephotography #canonphotography #bbcearth

Lucky enough to spot the blue footed booby on San Cristobal Island. These marine birds are not born with blue feet. Their feet turn blue when they are mature and the colour also depends on what kind of food they eat. Sardines will turn their feet bluer. . . . . . . . . . #thegalapagosislands #thegalapagos #sancristobal #sancristobalgalapagos #equador #southamerica #charlesdarwin #evolution #travel #seetheworld #birds #marinebirds #bluefootedbooby #naturephotography #nationalgeographic #natgeotravel #natgeoyourshot #natgeowild #natgeonature #bbctravel #wildlife #wildlifephotography #canonphotography #bbcearth

Sea lions! You will find them almost everywhere on the islands, even on the streets of San Cristobal. They lay around all day under the sun, rolling in sand, playing with their pups and making the most obnoxious sounds. When in water though, they are quite amazing to see as they playfully swim around. Their extreme water acrobatics leaves them tired and depleted of oxygen, thus the sun bathing for hours is necessary! . . . . . #thegalapagosislands #thegalapagos #sancristobal #sancristobalgalapagos #equador #southamerica #northernpacificocean #ocean #underthesea #sealions #charlesdarwin #evolution #travel #seetheworld #bbctravel #natgeotravel #natgeo #natgeoyourshot #wildlife #nature #gopro #natgeowild #bbcearth

Sharing the ocean with the beautiful sea turtles. Sea turtles have existed for more than 100 millions years, surviving the extinction of dinosaurs and making them some of the most ancient creatures on Earth. . . . . . . . #thegalapagosislands #thegalapagos #sancristobal #sancristobalgalapagos #equador #southamerica #northernpacificocean #ocean #underthesea #reptiles #charlesdarwin #evolution #travel #seetheworld #seaturtles #bbctravel #natgeotravel #natgeo #natgeoyourshot #bbcearth

I hate to end on a somber note, but sadly that's the world we live in. It's impossible to tell the story of these islands and these inimitable creatures without out addressing what humans have done to them. During the 19th century, whalers carried off thousands of giant tortoises, taking advantage of their ability to survive for months without food or water. Four species went extinct due to the whalers' appetites, and the others were left critically endangered, but atleast the sailors had fresh meat. Fur traders nearly wiped out the seal population during the same period. Settlement brought new threats to the islands in the form of invasive species, habitation fragmentation, pollution, and illegal fishing and hunting. There are now dozens of endangered species including the Galapagos penguin, shark, hawk, sea lion, land Iguana, fur seal, the remaining species of giant tortoise, and the Pacific Green seaturtles seen above. As sea temperatures continue to rise and plastics accumulate, that list will only expand. Endemic species are the most vulnerable of all. If we want these guys to survive the next century we need to make changes. That means reducing our carbon footprint and our resource consumption both as individuals and as nations. It means a bipartisan effort to hold elected officials and corporations accountable. It means giving up a lot of little conveniences and few big ones, in exchange for something more valuable, namely, the integrity of the world around us.

"Many people have spoken at length of the Sally Lightfoots. In fact, everyone who has seen them has been delighted with them. The very name they are called by reflects the delight of the name. These little crabs, with brilliant cloisonné carapaces, walk on their tiptoes, They have remarkable eyes and an extremely fast reaction time. In spite of the fact that they swarm on the rocks at the Cape, and to a less degree inside the Gulf, they are exceedingly hard to catch. They seem to be able to run in any of four directions; but more than this, perhaps because of their rapid reaction time, they appear to read the mind of their hunter. They escape the long-handled net, anticipating from what direction it is coming. If you walk slowly, they move slowly ahead of you in droves. If you hurry, they hurry. When you plunge at them, they seem to disappear in a puff of blue smoke—at any rate, they disappear. It is impossible to creep up on them. They are very beautiful, with clear brilliant colors, red and blues and warm browns. ... Man reacts peculiarly but consistently in his relationship with Sally Lightfoot. His tendency eventually is to scream curses, to hurl himself at them, and to come up foaming with rage and bruised all over his chest. Thus, Tiny, leaping forward, slipped and fell and hurt his arm. He never forgot nor forgave his enemy. From then on he attacked Lightfoots by every foul means he could contrive and a training in Monterey street fighting has equipped him well for this kind of battle). He hurled rocks at them; he smashed at them with boards; and he even considered poisoning them. Eventually we did catch a few Sallys, but we think they were the halt and the blind, the simpletons of their species. With reasonably well-balanced and non-neurotic Lightfoots we stood no chance." ... ~John Steinbeck, The Log from the Sea of Cortez
